The Expressive Arts
The terms art therapy, expressive arts therapy and the expressive arts are often used to describe very different things. Art therapists (or arts therapist) are highly trained practitioners who attain degrees from universities or certificates of qualification from recognized institutions. The training is lengthy, arduous and specialized. Expressive arts practitioners may or may not be art therapists.
I am a certified (OCT) teacher with expertise in the visual arts and special education. Further to my teaching qualification I am an MA in Adult Education and Community Development with a sub-specialty in Palliative and Support Care across the Life Course. These qualifications combined with broad experience in the arts-in-health field as an artist and arts educator enable me to use the expressive arts as an educational tool rather than a therapy.
With guidance and the use of art prompts. participants are over joyed at the spectacular works of artistic expression, Art gives a feeling of purpose, expression and accomplishment.
